The Effect of Microwave Energy on Grindability of a
coal samples treated by microwave oven, the Impact Strength Index (ISI) test was applied for each treated and untreated sample and compared with each other. Experimental results have shown that significant increases in grindability were achieved when the coal samples were exposed to microwave radiation. The ISI of samples decreased up to 96%.
Abstract: Microwave pretreatment is an effective method to promote grindability of coal samples along with moisture reduction. A contrast test was designed to explore a mechanism of grindability improvement process of coal by microwave pretreatment. Coal samples of 2–1 mm were investigated.
The resulting Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) provides a measure of the energy required in a grinding process or a measure of yield for given energy input. A prepared 50g sample of No. 16—No. 30 sieve size coal and eight 1in (25.4mm) diameter polished steel grinding balls are placed in a stationary bowl having a machined circular track.

Dec 01, 2011 Standard Test Method for Grindability of Coal by the Hardgrove-Machine Method 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the relative grindability or ease of pulverization of coals in comparison with coals chosen as standards.
The Hardgrove Grindability Index was developed as an empirical test to indicate how difficult it would be to grind a specific coal to the particle size necessary for effective combustion in a pulverized coal fired boiler. Its use has been extended to cover the preparation of pulverized coal for the cement, steel and chemical production industries.

The Hardgrove grindability index value is influenced by petrographic composition of coal. The analysis of grindability of British coal confirmed wide relation of HGI values between the quality group of coal, volatile combustible matter contents, carbon and hydrogen (Fitton, 1957).

The Hardgrove grindability test and test machinery are designed and developed to characterize the relative grindability of coals. The Hardgrove grindability index represents a composite physico-mechanical property of the coal, embracing a number of specific properties such as hardness, strength, tenacity and fracture, and is a function primarily of coal rank and secondarily of coal type.

Explanation: Grindability is the ease with which a coal can be grounded. The grindability index of pulverised coal is about 100. This is because of the volatile matter present in the coal, the higher the volatile matter of coal, the more will be its grindability index.
When coal is used as powder fuel, its grindability feature is utilized. Hardgrove index is one of the tests applied in coal preparation plants to determine the grindability of coal. This test method is a simple, fast and efficient method and is widely used because it is reproducible under laboratory conditions.
behavior of coal for size reduction, it is necessary to use the tests based on size reduction. One of usual methods for determining the grindability of coal is Hardgrove index method. Soft or hard coals were evaluated for the grindability - toward 100. Coal HGI depends on the coalification, moisture, volatile
